Orthodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of malocclusions, or improper bites. Malocclusions can be caused by many factors, including genetics, prematurely lost primary teeth, and environmental influences. The most common type of orthodontic treatment is braces. Braces are metal brackets that are attached to the teeth with dental adhesive. Wires are then threaded through the brackets and attached to the arch wire, which applies pressure to help move the teeth into the correct position.

Did You Know?

One of the benefits of braces is that they are very effective in treating more severe cases of malocclusion. In fact, braces can be used to treat malocclusion that cannot be treated by other types of orthodontic treatment, such as clear aligners.

Am I a candidate for braces?

You may be a candidate for braces if you have one or more of the following:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • An overbite, underbite, or crossbite

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for braces is to consult with an orthodontist. During your consultation, the orthodontist will examine your teeth and bite and make recommendations based on your individual needs. To find out if braces are right for you, schedule a consultation with your Detroit orthodontist today!

What can I expect when having my braces put on?

Before having your braces put on, you can expect the orthodontist to take x-rays and impressions of your teeth. These will be used to create a custom treatment plan for you.

The process of putting on braces usually takes about an hour. During this time, the orthodontist will clean your teeth and use a dental adhesive to apply the brackets to your teeth. Once the brackets are in place, the orthodontist will thread the wire through the brackets and attach it to the arch wire.

You may experience some discomfort after having your braces put on, but this is normal. The best way to manage discomfort is to take over-the-counter pain medication and eat soft foods until your teeth have adapted.

What can I expect during treatment?

During your orthodontic treatment, you will need to see the orthodontist every four to six weeks for a check-up. At these appointments, the orthodontist will adjust the wire and make any necessary changes to your braces. You may experience some discomfort after these appointments, but this is normal. As mentioned above, the best way to manage discomfort is to take over-the-counter pain medication and eat soft foods until your teeth have adapted.
In addition to regular check-ups, you will also need to take care of your braces at home. This includes brushing and flossing regularly and avoiding hard and sticky foods. Your orthodontist will provide you with a list of foods to avoid while wearing braces. It is important to follow the orthodontist’s instructions carefully to ensure that your treatment is successful.

How long does orthodontic treatment last?

The length of your orthodontic treatment will depend on the severity of your malocclusion. In general, most people wear braces for one to two years. After your braces are removed, you will need to wear a retainer to maintain the results of your treatment.
